Acupuncture and Moxibustion

Japanese Style Acupuncture & Moxibustion (Harikyu)

oriental medicine

Harikyu is Japanese practice of acupuncture & moxibustion. Harikyu works by stimulating your body’s own natural healing forces and tonifying the vital energy or Qi.
There are slight differences between general Harikyu and Chinese acupuncture. Harikyu is much more hands on than its Chinese cousin.

Acupuncture was first introduced from China to Japan about 1,500 years ago. During the Edo period (17th – 19th centuries) in Japan, acupuncture was a profession widely practiced by the blind. This created a rich tradition of diagnosing by touch (palpation) which has been passed on to modern Japanese practitioners. This enabled us to offer more customized approach to each patient. Japanese practitioners typically use thinner needles with guided tubes, shallower needle insertion techniques, and less needle stimulation. On contrary, Chinese practitioners typically uses thicker needles, deeper and direct needle insertion techniques, and more needle stimulation.
Use of direct moxibustion (herbal heat treatment) is another characteristic of general Harikyu treatment.

So, which style is the best for you?
The answer to this question really depends on your treatment needs and personal preferences. Medical SPA focuses on Harikyu style. Please feel free to consult us, if you have any questions about our practice.

*There are many different acupuncture & moxibustion styles. The information above describes general difference between Japanese & Chinese acupuncture & moxibustion.
